No Local Experience: Rediscovering Who I Am

“No local experience.”
These simple words can unravel years of confidence. Behind that polite phrase lies a deep sting, saying your past and skills no longer count, and your worth needs to be proven all over again.
For many who migrate, this is not just about finding work. It’s about finding ourselves again. You arrive with hope and courage, carrying the stories, wisdom, and achievements that shaped you. But soon, you find yourself on unfamiliar ground, your voice smaller, your value questioned. Each rejection quietly chips away something inside, leaving behind an ache of invisibility and loss.
The grief is real. You grieve the professional identity once held with pride. You grieve the community that once understood you without words. And you grieve the simple sense of belonging, that deep human need to be known, seen, and accepted.
Loneliness often becomes the silent companion. There are days when conversations feel foreign, when laughter around you reminds you that you are an outsider. You begin to wonder if you will ever fit in, or if a part of you will always stay behind in the country you left.
Yet, somewhere in that quiet wilderness, resilience begins to stir. You learn to bend without breaking, to find strength not from recognition, but from faith. For me, it was in those silent prayers and tear-stained nights that I found a still, gentle reminder: that my worth was never tied to what I do, but to Whose I am.
God became my anchor in the in-between, when I was no longer who I was, and not yet who I would become. Slowly, I began to rebuild from the inside out. Each small connection, each act of grace, each moment of courage became a brick in a new foundation.
Migration taught me that home is not just a place; it’s a sense of being held by God, by hope, and by those who choose to see your heart beyond your accent or résumé.
At Architect of Life Counselling, I offer space for those walking this same unseen journey, where identity feels lost, but meaning can be rebuilt. Together, we rediscover who you are, beyond titles and expectations, and uncover the quiet strength that has been there all along.
Because even when the world says “no local experience,” your story still holds infinite worth, written by the One who never stops seeing you.
